Material placed between plates of opposite poles in order to prevent internal short circuits; the material must also allow the current to pass through.

Range Connection

A circuit in which the positive pole of battery is connected to the negative pole of the next battery.

Shedding

The separation of active material from the plate during operation. The term is usually used in connection with the positive plates.

Shelf Life

The ability of a battery to retain its charge on open circuit. See self discharge.

Short Circuit

A circuit through a low resistance, either external to the battery or internal.

Weight per unit volume of a substance relative to that of water.

Sulphation

In its common usage, the term refers to the formation of lead sulphate in plates of such physical properties that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to reconvert it to active material.
